Fan and Amateur Fiction Survey

About the Questionnaire

The Project

This survey is part of Amateur Fiction Online - The Web of Community Trust, a Human Computer Interaction doctoral research project currently being undertaken by K. Faith Lawrence at the School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton. Supervisor: dr monica schraefel

This is a questionnaire designed to investigate how people find and access fan and amateur fiction on the Internet.

We recognise that online communities are frequently the target of social science studies so we would like to make clear that this survey is part of a human-computer interaction project and the answers are intended to inform the design of applications to aid and support the community as well as further research into usability and trustworthiness of the Web. If you have any questions about this project then please contact me as detailed below or contact the FanFiction Ontology Creation Project, a group made up of members of the fan fiction community who have expressed interest in the related work.

Target Respondents

The questionnaire is aimed at Internet users of all ages whether they are part of an amateur writing or fan fiction community or not.
Please feel free to forward this URL to anyone you know who might be interested although we would request you only forward or link to this page and not directly to the questionnaire.

The Format

The questionnaire is in seven parts. Depending on your answers to certain questions you will only be asked to complete a total of five or six sections, however all the questions in those sections should be answered unless it explicitly states otherwise. If you wish to view all the questions in the survey before you begin (even those you are not required to answer) a preview is available. Once you have started answering questions the form will automatically disable the sections that you are not required to answer.

In addition to the seven parts mentioned above there is a final section which gives you the oppotunity to make comments or express any opinions you feel you were prevented from making elsewhere in the questionnaire. This section is totally optional.

No information will be collected or stored until you choose to send it to us by selecting the "Submit" option. You are free to abandon the questionnaire any time or to submit an incomplete set of responses. We hope, however, that you will choose to complete the all the requested sections of the questionnaire.

Data and Privacy

All responses to the questions are confidential and anonymous. No answers will be associated with any specific respondent and all data will be stored in accordance with the UK Data Protection Act.

Completion

This questionnaire should only be completed once per person. Steps will be taken to remove multiple postings by the same person. Any information collected to prevent spamming of the questionnaire will only be used for this express purpose. It will remain confidential and will not be included in any subsequent analysis.

Time

The questionnaire will take roughly fifteen to twenty minutes to complete (give or take a few minutes depending which sections are applicable to your situation).

Content

Some of the questions mention in passing the existence of stories related to controversial subjects such as sex, drugs and violence. Other than mentioning the potential existence of such works the questions are not concerned with any of these subjects nor do they go into any details about them, use inappropriate language or give links or other information about where to find such works.

Contact Details

If you would like any further information about the project that this questionnaire relates to or are interested in the results then please get in contact with me, Faith Lawrence, via e-mail at kf03r@ecs.soton.ac.uk.. I would be happy to discuss any of the related subjects and issues but would request that, if possible, you take the survey before getting in contact to avoid my responses biasing the results.

Thank you.

Instructions

Start at the first section and then follow the instructions given to proceed through the questionnaire.

Select answers that most closely represent your views and practices on the topics included. There are some cases in which you will have to make a decision as to which of several scenarios best represent your views and practices, even though there may be others that are equally as valid. While some questions allow the option of selecting more than one answer, in the majority of cases we are interested in determining what your priorities are if given the chance to select only one.

Please click on the button below to go to the questionnaire. By doing so you confirm that you have read and understood the information detailed above and are willing to participate in the survey.
